Polycarp!

Polycarp is no doubt used to set the scene. This is suggested by the title itself. I also agree that it is used to show the character of Herr (Johan) Resch. However, most of them have only mentioned that this showed his inhumane character. However, it also shows that Herr Resch is not totally against Jews at that time. Or else, why would he have let Friedrich's family rent a place there? I think that his feeling against the Jews was actually "re-ignited" by the NAZI government.

At this period of time, we can confidently say that Herr Resch definitely cared for Polycarp. The reason to this feeling is most probably the responsibilty he feels about keeping his family heirloom safe. This is supported by the book. Overall, Polycarp does not play any major role in the plot; it is just to indicate about Herr Resch's feelings. This is a skill I think we ought to learn as the author has implemented this indication very subtly.
