I think Polycarp is there just to show how Germans treat inanimate objects compared to how Germans actually treated Jews during the second World War.
It was a good measure mark to show how disrespectful Germans were to Jews and how resentful of the Jews Germans were. Like, Herr Resch treated an inanimate DWARF MODEL with far more care than he treated a Jew? Racial discrimination would be the word.
Therefore i can conclude Polycarp is just there as a measure mark to show to what extent did the Germans hate Jews during the Second World War.

POLYCARP
I think that polycarp is there to show the contrast as how the Germans treated the jews to how the Germans treated plain inanimate objects.
Although not all Germans are like that, some still help Jews, but the stereotypes of Germans at that time were Herr Resch. As what Mrs. Simon said, they were still angry with other countries and could easily be stirred up. (drifting away from the subject[always in discussions in english classes]NOT advised as wasting LOTS of time)
Herr Resch hated the Jews and cared more for a DWARF(how NOT cute) then for a live human !!!(firmly NOT advised)Jews were discriminated to be even less value then a garden dwarf. :'( *sniff* *sniff*.

Polycarp
For me, i think that Polycarp was just a part of the setting of the garden. You know, typical foreigner's garden. DWARFS! I think not many people in Singapore have dwarfs ruling over their garden or something. Like HELLO? Who would like their garden to be ruled over by something that is not even a living organism? Unless you mean like the owner controls it or something. Like do you think the owner is sooo free that he/ she would drag a chair over to the garden just to talk to it or just to make it seem more life- like, the owner starts trying to make the dwarf move and maybe in the process breaking the dwarf's arm or leg. Ouch. Poor dwarf. Haha. I want to rule over my own garden! Though sometimes too much power/ control might be bad for your health and soon you realise that all your hair is falling out. HA. Really. I think Polycarp's only there for decorations. To 'spice' up the garden; make it seem nicer? Yeah Polycarp can't even defend himself against ONE TINY LITTLE BUG. Hey was Herr Resch a bit out of his mind? Possibly hallucinating or something? Or is he delirious? For him, Polycarp was even more important than the a REAL LIVING person. Weird.
Polycarp...
I think Polycarp was just used to set the scene in the first chapter in a more 'unusual' way (this is the first book I've read that talks about 'irrelevent' little statues like Polycarp). It could also be used in a very subtle way to display the inhumanity of Herr Resch as he plainly disregarded the live of Friedrich, a HUMAN, but treated Polycarp, a DEAD / NON-LIVING THING, with great care.
Sorry I sent so late. Did not have much time to do this before now.
Sorry I sent so late. Did not have much time to do this before now.
Polycarp!!! The Little Garden Dwarf...
It literally just sets the scene of the Jew family's garden. I mean look, it is just a little foot-sized fella who watches nowhere except in front of it/him/she (I dunno.) XD. Lets see, if I changed it to a dialogue between two Polycarps in thegarden, what will it be...
Electric Rooster (extremely light-sensitive): Crock-co-doodle-doo!!
Polycarp 1: Man, can't you just don't crow for once?
-Few moments of silence- (Polycarps um like they have poor IQ such that they do not know that that rooster can't talk?)
Polycarp 2: What's with that silence?
Polycarp 1: When did I even told YOU to talk?
Polycarp 2: ... -_-"
Polycarp 1: Er... What's with that look?
Polycarp 2: When did I even told YOU to ask?
(OK. Seems that things are getting rough between Polycarps. Seriously grumpy statues they are.)
P.S. Did I just said statues!?
P.S.S That means they can't even talk!
P.S.S.S That means...
P.S.S.S.S HELP!! THERE'S A LIVING POLYCARP!! NO! I MEANT TWO!!

Polycarp!
Polycarp is no doubt used to set the scene. This is suggested by the title itself. I also agree that it is used to show the character of Herr (Johan) Resch. However, most of them have only mentioned that this showed his inhumane character. However, it also shows that Herr Resch is not totally against Jews at that time. Or else, why would he have let Friedrich's family rent a place there? I think that his feeling against the Jews was actually "re-ignited" by the NAZI government.
At this period of time, we can confidently say that Herr Resch definitely cared for Polycarp. The reason to this feeling is most probably the responsibilty he feels about keeping his family heirloom safe. This is supported by the book. Overall, Polycarp does not play any major role in the plot; it is just to indicate about Herr Resch's feelings. This is a skill I think we ought to learn as the author has implemented this indication very subtly.
Polycarp
I think that Polycarp was put there to set the scene like the title of the chapter suggests. When we write compositions, we are told to include setting. Polycarp could be the author's setting in the story.
Maybe it was "fashionable" to have garden dwarves in those times.
I think Herr Resch treated Polycarp with care and attention because it was a "Resch family heirloom", though not an expensive one. It could also have belonged to one of Herr Resch's late relatives who was very close to him. That could be the reson why Herr Resch treated Polycarp with respect and ask his wife to trim the grass when it grew too long to let Polycarp have a view of the dahlias. Herr Resch could also be very sad about that late relative's death and thus did not treat humankind well because he could have thought that it was not fair that his relative had to die when other people were alive and kicking.

Polycarp
Well, I think that Polycarp may have done more than set the scene. He actually says a lot about Herr Resch. The two facts(1. The landlord's wife had to trim the grass so that Polycarp could see over it, like Herr Resch not doing his job but leaving it to someone else and 2. Herr Resch cared more about Polycarp than Friedrich and his family) seem to insinuate that Herr Resch is rather inhumane, as Shirlyn says, and lazy to boot. That he would put his own garden dwarf in higher regard than a living person, Jew or no, already gives us the impression of a highly racist/sentimental (?) person. Not to mention his leaving his job to others, like Polycarp does. I think that the comparison to Polycarp tells you that others must do things for Herr Resch, that he is used to getting his own way and that others must bend to his will. Or something along those lines.

Polycarp!
My guess is that he is a well known person in that area but does not have much to do with the plot of the story. It might also be a way that the author uses to start off the story.

Polycarp
I think Polycarp is just there to show how inhumane Herr Resch was (besides setting the scene and all) . He only cared about his garden dwarf, a non-living thing, after the raid and happy that Friedrich had died. Herr Resch even kicked Friedich's body!!! How evil.
Polycapr (or is it Polycarp?)
Polycarp is there to show how lazy Herr Resch is; he sits(okay, some say stand) doing nothing(okay, he sits(okay, some say stand)on the lawn) , just like Herr Resch (okay, he breathes, eats, drinks......) He(Fine! 'It') might also be there to show(symbolise) the hatred of jews by the Nazis. I mean, that old fella(Herr Resch) even bothered trying to find him in the dark when Friedrich(not to be pronounced 'fried rich') was there next to him. Herr Resch even wanted to glue his head(or is it a(or is it the tip of his(its)) cap?)back on when it was cut(sliced?) off by a piece of shrapnel(piece of a bomb)
Polycarp
I think he is mentioned so as to set the scene and I think that it is also to compare him to Herr Resch to show how both of them do not do much just sit at home and occasionally call to conduct his business.
I believe that he is also there to like set the scene and that there would be something to occupy his attention and prevent him from seeing Friedrich once he got out from the air-raid shelter at the end of the story.

Holidays
I would save the $200 because i hope to get into RI and it would cost a lot of money so I have better start saving.
I will also spend some money to buy LEGO sets, I love to play with LEGOs they are extremely fun and I can make anything I want with them as long as I have enough pieces.
I will also register for the special membership in the library that would allow me to borrow 8 books at once.

Polycarp
I think he's just there to set the scene, maybe add on some detail and a very remote chance, for good luck. The title of the chapter says it all and no, he is not important as he is hardly mentioned.
Polycarp sounds funny *haha*
I really do NOT know why some garden dwarf is put there but my guess would be it is used as an analogy. I say so with this reason:
'If the grass grew too high for him to see the dahlias by the fence the landlord's wife would creep across the lawn on her knees and clip the blades to matchstick length with her garden shears'
I know garden dwafs can't move, but compare it to this sentence on Herr Johann Resch :
'Now he let other slaesmen do his work, while he conducted his business by telephone'
I really do think this knd of shows that both dwarf and owner don't do much, huh?
P.S. Darryl, they still have lots of Garden Dwarfs in the villages of Germany! They even have some in the cities!

Polycarp (Ha ha Darryl, Parrotfish..)
Well, actually, I not sure but It says that Polycarp ruled over the front garden so maybe Polycarp ruled over the garden while Herr Reisch(Not sure about spelling) ruled over the house or something. It could have been because the author wanted the story to be longer...
Also, there's this bit where it says that his owner was wealthy and now conducted business over the phone and yadayada.
Since garden statues (In this case, a dwarf) don't do anything, his owner also doesn't do anything (kind of)
Sorry for the sudden shortness of my post)

POLYCARP
I think it is for the scenery, and that it does not need to be there, as I think that the author just wants to make it a 'grandeur' effect. Then again, he might just want to show that the story is very old (tad unnecessary, since we all know its about the Holocaust-all on the cover page), when people had garden dwarfs in their gardens. Mind you, it might be a sort of joke - Poly is Polly the parrot and carp is a kind of fish I think. Hmm... Polycarp the Parrotfish.

$Money$
I return it to them since:
(1)- I don’t know what to do with it.
(2)- I don’t think I deserve it.
ANYWAY I’ve already got loads of hongbao money this CNY and I still have no idea of what to do with it.
Polycarp
My guess would be that he was just there to set the scene (and once again, the title says it all... The title of the chapter, that is) and to add some detail to the story, that’s all. Besides, he’s only mentioned twice in the book, in the first chapter ad the bit where they mention a bit of shrapnel slicing off a bit of his cap or something.

Thanks everyone who commented on what they would do with $200. I am glad to see that MOST of you would spend it on books or something sensible. Special mention to Darryl who would return it to his parents as they need it more. How thoughtful and filial.
Now on to more serious deliberatings.
Chapter - Setting the Scene (1925)
Why is Polycarp mentioned? Is he significant to the story? If so, why is he important?
Waiting for your comments...

Hehehehe... $_$ Ooh lala...
Ca-ching ca-ching! $_$ $_$ $_$<-----3 money faces.
Welcome to the world of $200!! You have scriped the lucky chance to just splurge with it! Congrats congrats!!
Seriously, I will just keep the money in my bank account which has approximately to the nearest thousand, $1000. Then, I will get the annual interest of around 5% and soon enough, if I make a will to allow this bank account to only be able to be opened by my descendants 1000 years later. By then, it should have accumulated up to a rather large fortune (wow).
Now, based on the facts of that I'm still in my childhood days, I'll probably spend it on games. Below goes my calculations:
$81 to Warcraft: Reign of Chaos Battlechest
$31.5 to 3 MapleSEA cashcards
$22 to a possible new EX DELTA SPECIES Deck of cards if I am still a fan of PTCG after this year
$65.5 to the last and final book of HARRY POTTER
Lets see... It adds up to exactly $200!!! Man, I think I spent the most in the class...

What's in a name?
I think that in a name, all the letters in your name can actually mean something. Taking my name for example, 'M' can stand for magnaminous, 'a' for adequet in studies, 'r' for relaxed and not being too stressed, 'c' can stand for compassionate, 'u' is unique for everyone has their own abilities and finally, 's' for sincerity. Those above are the good meanings of it, however, there IS a bad version. 'M' for moronic, 'a' for atrocious, 'r' for ridiculous, 'c' for crazy, 'u' for unreasonable and 's' for stupid. Don't mind the bad ones though. they are probably not thought of at all...
Crime of passion...
Three words to the murderer. YOU ARE EBIL!!!! A two-year old, dead, dying a such a terrible and unsightly death. Decomposing! Yuck... Ok, this is way too disgusting to comment, really sorry 'bout this.

Seriously, I would just give it back (unless it is New Year, then that is a different thing). I have nothing to do with it anyway...
Yep. My parents need that money more too.
But, if I was forced to accept it, I would either save it, or buy some books. Of course, with New Year money, I see it, and it allegedly goes into the bank...

Ok, sorry it's come in so late...
First, about the Nonoi issue. Whatever the reason, no one should kill anyone. I know that sounds quite impossible, but if you read the BFG, the BFG says human beings are the only species that behaves so badly that they whip out WMDs and start wiping out cities (think Hiroshima) and/or allow their minds to become so twisted that they would kill their own stepkids. And Jonathan, I've read the curious incident of the dog in the night-time and it's quite a good book is it not?

Now, for our most recent post. I don't know if I have a bank account (parents haven't told me), but if I do, I'll put the money in there or contribute to some non-profit charities (but likely not NKF, ha ha) because I really have no idea as to what on earth to do with it. Although personally I could do with a few books... but then again there's PSLE to consider. No time to go stick my nose into storybooks. Aww...

Not very good drawing up there...
Hmm... What would I do with $200... I definitely won't put it in the bank because well, I don't even know whether my money has increased or not and anyway I bet if I tried to withdraw all of my money they wouldn't be able to pay me in cash because of the interest. I don't think that's clear but anyway, I think it would take some time to withdraw the money from the bank.
And anyway there's nothing to spend on...
Even if I liked the Maplestory that Shawn is playing, I wouldn't waste 30 something dollars on a card which is used to buy stuff that doesn't last in the game. Anyway, it would be wasting time too, playing the game during PSLE year. (P.S. Shawn, no offence meant but are you serious???)
As I said...
There's nothing to spend it on except for...
BOOKS!
I know! I could spend it on BOOKS!
But what books?
I like the 'Da Vinchi Code' (at least the parts that I read so far) but my mother won't allow me and my sister agrees too, she says it's blasphemous. Anyway I know that it's totally fake about the Christianity or Catholicty or whatever bit so why can't I?
Anyway, all Dan Brown books aside, what OTHER books?
Tamora Pierce's (a fantasy writer) (yes she writes about females who go through knight training yadayada and females who become spymasters but the immortals in there are quite interesting as well as the story itself) books are good but I've read all the Tortall books and all the Circle of Magic books--- Woops! I haven't read all the Circle of Magic books yet...
However, it's always so hard to find them except in the library when you're luck so what now??
Well, I could always buy the 1st and the 5th book of the Chronicles of ---
Guess!
Narnia??? Scroll down and find out
Correct answer is Prydain (either that of Prydian)!
But anyway I think that I might be able to find them except for the fact that Llyod Alexander is not a well-known author...
So I could just maybe go to a book sale where they sell all kinds of books....
And the rest... Well, I'm not sure...
WHAT should I do?

(scenario 1) AFTER PSLE!!!!!!
Wow! When I get the money I will first think to myself, how I wish there was another zero behind the digit. After all the greedy fantasizing, I would go to a book shop and buy all of Dan Browns books(I already have Da Vinci Code anyway) ! That would cost about $54(18*3) so I have $146 left. I would then head to the nearest 7-11 store to buy 3 maplestory game cashcards(its something for a game Mrs. Simon), one for $10.50, so it would cost $31.50.
I have $114.50 left then. The rest of it goes to the bank!
(scenario 2) BEFORE PSLE!!!!!!
I would just buy all the Dan Brown Bo0ks which will cost $54, buy the book of ancient monuments which is $30 and save the rest in the bank. You see, PSLE makes a big difference!

I would wuy a wittle wamster!Wah! I wove wittle wamsters! Waybe a wittle woggie! Wah!(for everything that sounds funny, change the W to something different!)
Holidays
$200! I would probably put most of it in the bank, save most of the rest, and spend the remainder on a good book. After all, I have yet to read Digital Fortress...then again, I have nothing else to spend it on. In total, I think it would look like this: $150-to the bank
$50-Digital Fortress and the
rest to my savings
Happy Holidays to everyone!

about that money...
Well...actually I have nothing much to do with it. Ok, fine. Maybe I would take about five to ten dollars to play arcade and then treat my family to Escape Theme Park or Wild Wild Wet. The rest I would just keep and then smile and rejoice that I have more money than my brother. =)
MONEY
Well, I think I will just put the money into my savings and possibly give it to my dad to be stored in bank. I have nothing to spend my money on, you see. (The only 'toys' that play with now are the robots that I build and sometimes program using lego mindstorm. I have just about enough parts for it already and don't really need any thing more for it.)

Holidays
Hi 6/12,
Don't know if you are too busy enjoying your holidays to log on but I wanted you to think about this.
Hypothetical situation: Your parents are very pleased with all your hard work and have decided to reward you with $200! What will you do with the money?
Some thoughts, please.

Ohhh........
Crime of passion? Oh I remember! No wonder it somehow sounded uncanny.
Then again, it was an unlikely motive! I will take that in mind!
Then again, it was an unlikely motive! I will take that in mind!
Poor Nonoi...
Poor Nonoi...dying just like that. She was only two years old! Her stepfather is being suspected of her murder right now. Personally, I do not think he killed Nonoi. The newspapers said that he was a softspoken person and all those but well, I guess it's back to the saying "Do not judge a book by its cover". There was a picture showing him hanging his head. Was that for guilt? Or was it because he was being blamed for something he did not do? I think the crowd believed it was for guilt when they gathered outside his flat. Some were pointing fingers and even saying bad words!
I cannot imagine Nonoi was actually STUFFED UNDER A FLYOVER which was BARELY 5 CENTIMETERS HIGH! How could a toddler's body fit there???? I mean, a toddler's body isn't that thin. Plus when they found her body, it was already decomposing! Gross! Who would have the heart to kill a adorable and helpless toddler? Whoever did that must be very cruel.
I hope for two-year-old Nonoi's sake that the real killer will be apprehanded as soon as possible and for everyone else's sake, I DEFINITELY hope that None of this type of incident will EVER occur again.
1. Tip from Tae Kwon Do: The elbow is the strongest point on your body. If you are close enough to use it, do!
2. If a robber asks for your wallet and/or purse, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM. Toss it away from you....chances are that he is more interested in your wallet and/or purse than you, and he will go for the wallet/purse. RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION!
3. If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car, kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like crazy. The driver won't see you, but everybody else will. This has saved lives.
4. Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing their checkbook, or making a list, etc. DON'T DO THIS!) The predator will be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in on the passenger side, put a gun to your head, and tell you where to go. AS SOON AS YOU GET INTO YOUR CAR, LOCK THE DOORS AND LEAVE.
a. If someone is in the car with a gun to your head DO NOT DRIVE OFF, repeat: DO NOT DRIVE OFF! Instead gun the engine and speed into anything, wrecking the car. Your Air Bag will save you. If the person is in the back seat they will get the worst of it. As soon as the car crashes bail out and run. It is better than having them find your body in a remote location.
5. A few notes about getting into your car in a parking lot, or parking garage:
A.) Be aware: look around you, look into your car, at the passenger side floor, and in the back seat.
B.) If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the passenger door. Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling them into their vans while the women are attempting to get into their cars.
C.) Look at the car parked on the driver's side of your vehicle, and the passenger side. If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the mall, or work, and get a guard/policeman to walk you back out. IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. (And better paranoid than dead.)
6. ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs. (Stairwells are horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot. This is especially true at NIGHT!)
7. If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control, ALWAYS RUN! The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times; And even then, it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ. RUN, Preferably in a zig -zag pattern!
8. Women are always trying to be sympathetic: STOP. It may get you raped, or killed. Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good-looking, well educated man, who ALWAYS played on the sympathies of unsuspecting women. He walked with a cane, or a limp, and often asked "for help" into his vehicle or with his vehicle, which is when he abducted his next victim.

Crime of Passion
Dear 6/12,
1. Please note that someone's post "Murder" is nameless. I only see 2 little rectangles at the bottom of the post! Please identify yourself.
2. It is a 'crime of passion', not an 'act of passion'. A crime of passion is a crime, especially murder, caused by sexual jealousy.
I think we can confidently rule that out as the motive. Are we agreeable on that? Perhaps it is a crime committed in the heat of the moment.

MURDER
If you ask me, this have gone way too far. I mean, this is the second 'Huang Na case' already and more that the second murder of a child! What is the world coming to? You see, how would anyone suspect a stepfather of murdering his stepdaughter? Maybe it's because of that, the fact that he was her stepfather. Perhaps he was jealous about her being someone elses daughter. The crowd was angry at his flat obviously because he had murdered an innocent little girl. As I said, what is world coming to? I mean, murdering an innocent little girl?! I certainly see no point. Perhaps he was just to angry to consider his actions. Then he got scared and tried to hide the body under the flyover, where no one could find it. And to go so far as to strip her naked!Sigh... you notice there've been quite a lot of disasters recently? Could the world be coming to an end (according to the book of Revelations in the Bible, I hope no one feels uset about this, I don't mean to anger anyone)?...
The Nonoi incident
I think that the stepfather is very EVIL as he hurt a little child who had no defences. What does he have against her anyway? Also, if he was scared, why did he have to do it anyway? Also, many kidnappers kidnap kids because they are easy targets. Some do so for money or revenge, but why take it our on a small kid? What has the kid done to offend the person?
In fact, when the stepfather was arrested, people yelled obscenities at him and some even tried to attack him while the stepfather kept his head down all the time. If he was feeling shameful or even embarrassed, why did he have to kill Nonoi in the first place.
I read on the newspaper that this was the second time Nonoi's grandmother had a family tragedy.
I think that Jonathan might have gone a bit too far by calling the stepfather a psychomaniac (just a comment, Jonathan. No offence meant). If he really was one, well... maybe he would be in jail or the mental hospital before this happened.
Anyway, all I hope is that the person be quickly punished for his injustifiable action. I also hope that this will serve as a warning to all other lawbreakers that they cannot get away from the long arms of justice.

2 in 1 post - Names and Murdered girl
What's in a Name:
According to the book of "1000 Baby Names", my name means victorious, although i do not seem very victorious in life... My parents gave me this name because it matches my surname, which also starts with a "N". To me, a person's name is chosen according to his/her culture and position. An ordinary person would not be called "Princess" as it would sound funny. Calling a person by a brand like Mentos would be even more hilarious. unless it is a name in another language or something like that.
Horribly horrible murder case:
The first thing that comes to my mind knowing that the girl was killed and the stepfather arrested is that the murder has something to do with relationship problems. The man might have a valid reason for murdering the child as he would not murder someone (especially his own step daughter), unless he has gone horribly insane. The case has not been closed yet so maybe it was not him. The police should suspect people related to her as a stranger would also not kill someone he does not know for no reason unless he was paid to kill. My final comment is that Singaporeans should try to have a good relationship with others to avoid trouble.

Add on to 'Disgusting, Terrible.....blahblahblah'
Did he shed tears? If he did then maybe they were tears of sadness because he was going to jail and that his stepdaughter had died and the murderer would never be caught because everyone thought it was him.
Or they could be tears of happiness for some strange reason like maybe the reason that he was a psychopath/psycomaniac (whatever it is)/psycho____
Or they could be tears of guilt because he really did it. But no one knows do they? Unless of course he says that they are tears of guilt and that he did it which clears the whole case up unless he is a pyscho something and that he didn't know what he was saying.

...Disgusting,Ruthless,Horrible,Terrible,Terridisruthhorble...
First, when I read the article at first, (the one on her disappearing) I thought that she was kidnapped and that someone would call her family for a ransom.
However, two things rule that out (now that I think of it): 1. Hello! Be REALISTIC! Does kidnapping for ransom sound like it's practiced in Singapore at all??? NO... (Anyway, I ruled the kidnapping assumption out as I was being ridiculous)
2. As an article later said, Nonoi cried easily and so, if a kidnapper had kidnapped her, she most probably would have cried and woken her grandfather from his prayer-slumber.
Here's something WEIRD...
If Nonoi was sleeping, would she suddenly awake and get lost in her grandfather's apartment and go walking out of the door to the playground? (This challenges Shawn's and Clarissa's posts)
And this is what I found from this book called 'The curious incident of the dog in the night time'.
A dog, Wellington got killed and Christopher, this autistic 15 year old kid (NOT meaning baby goat) investigated the case and found that his own father had killed Wellington. Anyway, in the book there was this list of ruling out suspects and yadayada.
They were:
1) To hurt a person close to the victim
2) Usually someone who knows the victim
3) ... (I forgot the rest)
Anyway, with this, you can see that her stepfather could be a possible suspect because he fulfills statement 2.
Arguing against:
Also, the articles weren't detailed enough and the story seems to be very brief, for example: Girl disappeared
Girl killed by stepfather
End of story
It doesn't tell you why the police arrested him and how come the police thought he was the murderer. It only says that he led the police to the place his daughter was. It could have been that he was told that by someone who called him and that he lead the police to Nonoi because he wanted Nonoi to have a proper burial or something but didn't dare go himself. Anyway, what kind of criminal would tell the police something that would make themselves an immediate suspect?
(Correct question, I think)
Also, what motive did he have?
(A little unlikely)
He could have been FRAMED (No, not picture framed)
(Superbly Unlikely)
He could have been arrested as the police could not find the murderer and decided to use him as a scapegoat.
(Around the same as the framing thing)
Someone who hated him because of someone gave an anonymous tip-off to the police.
By the way, Clarissa and Shawn, what do you mean by 'act of passion'? An act of love? (yeah right)
Arguing for:
(Unlikely)
The stepfather could have been irritated by his daughter crying so much that he decided to silence her once and for all.
(Unlikely)
The stepfather could have been a psychopath/pyschomaniac (whatever that is)/pyscho_____
Verdict: My argument against him being arrested is due to the fact that there is not enough information. My argument for him being arrested is all unlikely reasons.
VerdictVerdict: Was the action of the police right? We don't know, there is not enough information. Did the stepfather kill Nonoi? We don't know, the fact is only from the newspaper. it does not give evidence to support the fact.
So....
my verdict is that ...
Pray to God and ask him to punish the person who killed her and let him be recognised and despised and hated. Ask God to accept Nonoi into the Kingdom of Heaven even though she does not believe in the Lord. She did not get the chance to do much in her life. Everyone should have the right to have that.
I do not know what we ought to do...
Anyway, if the stepfather really killed Nonoi, he is disgustingruthlesshorribleterrible, which when you combine them to make a word that can be easier to say, terridisruthhorble. And all the other names for bad people in the world.

Murder
I think that the girl is very unlucky, I hope that whoever the murderer is he/she would be punished. I hope that the murderer would be caught soon and be hanged for the crime that he had done.
I do not understand why did he wanted to kill the little girl. Is it because of some kind of hatred against step children? Is it because of fustration? Is it because he is crazy? Or is it that he is innocent and that he is framed? There are millions of possiblities, i hope that the police would find out the real reason and tell it to us
I think people are angry because they felt that it is injustice to kill a little girl. I feel that it is very injustice to kill a little girl.
This criminal act should act as a signal to tell us to wake up and not to be over reliant on the government.

NOINOI ... THE PITIFUL GIRL
Once upon a time, there was a girl called NoiNoi. She was lost from her home, but she was only 2 years old! ( First thing that comes to your mind is that a KIDNAPPER came to kidnap her)... ....
To Be Continued...
Firstly, when I first heard the news, I thought it was really a kidnapper like Huang Na's case -->The Sterotype
Secondly, I felt that the person who 'kidnapped' her was so horrible. He/She even wanted to kidnap a small, helpless 2-year old girl.
THE KIDNAPPER------------------------------------->
Thirdly, I thought that the kidnapper would be someone that is nobody to her or someone that hates her. ( HOW WOULD I KNOW IT IS HER OWN STEPFATHER ???)
I was passing the Aljunied Flyover that Saturday night when my father turned on the radio ," The 2-year old girl was FOUND DEAD AT ALJUNIED FLYOVER. She was killed by her own stepfather and he brought the police to the scene... ..."( This news was shocking as who would expect someone's own father to kill him/her?)
Sunday's New Paper was delivered to my doorstep. Yeah! Finally something to read!
The first few pages was about the death of NoiNoi. Even a vagabond living under the Flyover did not notice her body, who would know it was there... ... the next line explained that the stepfather brought the police to the scene and he was immediately suspected.
This is really a lesson for us to learn about how horrible and ruthless anybody can get.

COLD-BLOODED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This reminds me of the Huang Na case last year. I feel that the murderer was quite cold-blooded. He killed his step daughter! The murderer was also very close to 'Nonoi' just like in the Huang Na murder. I think that the the man should be severly punished as he had killed a defenceless toddler! I also read that 'Nonoi' had breathing difficulties due to a heart condition.
Regarding the matter of guessing your name...
Mrs Simon, just in case you didn't see my comment, what is your dialect?
Gross!
One word-uggh! There's one thing that I'm sure everyone else wants to know, why did the stepfather kill the toddler? Who could bear to kill an adorable little toddler? Was it a family feud? Was it a passion or lust for killing? This would send shivers down many people's spines, it did for mine.Singapore may have excellent security, it may be safe and secure, but we are still prone to acts like this.
When I first saw it in the news, I thought nothing of it, as the gate was left open, I thought the girl would probably have wandered off and got lost. When she still was not found, I started getting worried and hoped that was the case. I remembered the 'Huang Na' case and found that this was very similar. Then one night, I heard the news. Her body had been found, stuffed under Aljunied flyover. Why would anyone do such a gross thing?Of all the people, it was her stepfather, somebody she knew, who had murdered her.
I think her stepfather was either trying to convince people that he did not really meant what he did and actually felt no remorse at all, or maybe that really was the case. Who really knows? Only him and God do. I think this is really a sad thing and the police must have felt the same. The stepfather's neighbours must have felt the same pity for the girl and it really angered them that he had murdered his own stepdaughter. Her stepfather's acts were unforgivable and I think their blood probably boiled at the thought that their neighbour had killed his stepdaughter, and they drew away in revulsion.
This is an event that reminds us that even in the safest and most secure of countries, there will still be breakthroughs. No place anywhere in the world is protected to an extent that it is really immune to such things.

Gruesome........
I have two words for this incident. There are "pretty gruesome". What I want to know is why the toddlers stepfather killed her? Was it for because of a family feud? An act of passion? Honesty, I think this really sends a shiver to the bone. Singapore, no matter how safe and secure, is prone to such acts. That once again chills me to the bone.
Back to the topic, I at first thought that the girl have just gone lost and was hiding in some playground. After a while, I predicted it was not so. Then, I predicted it was a repeat of the "Huang Na" case. I was pretty much correct. The girl was killed, but what was more gruesome was that she had been stuffed under Ajunnied flyover. I though that was crazy, because the gap was barely 5 centimeters high. How could it fit a toddler body? How did he manage to stuff her in? But nonetheless, it was true and I then realized that facts could be weirder than fiction.
Well, I think that the toddler girl was loved by her neighbours and it angered them that her own stepfather had actually slaughtered her. Even if anyone was not her neighbour, I believe that they would be drawn back in revulsion by her stepfather's unforgivable acts.
I think this really reminds us that even the safest of countries is not immune to such acts.

Thanks to everyone who posted commments on our first topic. Indeed our names are so important. My husband and I deliberated over our children's names just like some of your parents did. People have trouble pronouncing my daughters' names too. My youngest, Leanne, has been called "Lean-nee"or "Lee- annie". To round off this topic, I will give 10 points to the person who can guess correctly what my dialect name means. My dialect name is 'Chin See'.

Have you been following the news about the little two-year-old girl who went missing last week? Well, her body has been found and her step-father has been arrested. What are your thoughts on this tragedy? Before the police reveal their findings from their investigations, what do you think what happened? Why was the crowd at his flat so angry when the police came and took him to the police station for questioning?

Names continued (post-notes)
Heh, sorry about that. I have always wondered why on Earth my parents gave me my name because, other than the people familiar with it, NO ONE CAN PRONOUNCE MY NAME!!!!! Seriously. My father's friend calls me 'Carolyn' and one of my cousins calls me 'Carelyn'. AAARRRGGGHH!! Sorry again about the frustration. Also, if you wanted to know, my chinese name means 'peaceful and graceful'. (Personally, I think I've been misnamed.) =#
P.S. Sorry about the chinese name. I can't change it right now.

Names
I think that names are definitely important as everyone is special and unique and should be different from another person. In my case, I really don't think you will ever find someone else out there named Clarilyn! My parents say that they originally couldn't decide so in the end, my name is just 'Clara' with a 'lyn' at the end, like my sister's name (Joycelyn). I later found out that 'Clara' means 'bright', a bit like 'Clarissa' does.
Why would anyone name a child after a sweet? It doesn't sound very good for the child's teeth, anyway. As for Princess Consuela, it's not appropriate for people to be named like that. Can you imagine "Princess Consuela Tan"? Not good. One problem with names, though, is that sooner or later you will find two people with the same name. Or maybe three. Then when someone talks to you about, let's say, 'Mary', you'll be asking, "Which one?" Gets a bit confusing and tiring after a while, get my point?

Names,manes,nomes
I think names are not just something to call people; they are somewhat symbolic of how much your parents love you. If your parents call you Stupid or Dumb, it reflects what they think you are. I am called Yu Jian as Yu means universe in chinese and Jian means health. Luckily, I am not called Stupid, Dumb or Mentos as they sound ridiculous. By the way, I AM A MALE!!!!!!!!!

What's in a name?
My name is Lim Jing as my mother and father is educated in chinese and so are not able to pronouce english name properly so they did not give me an english name and sometimes people mispronouced my name but I do not mind as sooner or laater they will know how to pronouce my name. I had also not met any other people that has the same name as me.
I am called Lim Jing as lim is my surname and the word 靖 in chinese means peace and no chaos.
I am not a princess and I believe that people should not give their children names that they know are already present as a name that is commonally use would not be able to distinguish different people. I am not called mentos for the simple reason that I am not a sweet.

Names
Well...everyone should have a name, because it gives them an identity. If there was no such thing as names, people would be going like,"OI!Come here!" or "Ah, come over for a minute," and that would sound weird and unspecific.Imagine the world then, becuse nobody would know when they are being called upon. Although my parents had a long time deciding on my name, they did not call me Princess Consuela or Mentos because I am not royalty, Consuela sounds really weird, exotic and foreign, and I am not a sweet. Worse still, people might not be able to pronounce it. The people I meet would probably go like,"er, really mentos, as in the sweet?" Then they would start teasing me.
According to my mother, my parents had a real long time deciding because they could not agree. They chose Clarissa because they originally wanted Clare, but then my mother said that Clare Poh sounds a bit weird and I might get teased. Clarissa means bright, so it was fine with them, they wanted something with a 'nice' meaning. Now, a lot of people call me Clare so it does not really matter. Even chinese names are taken into consideration. Overall, I think names are very important.

My name...
Everyone has a name. Names are important to us. They give us our identity. Imagine what the world would be if there was no such thing as names. Everyone would be going like "Ahh, come here", or "Hey, do this" and the person they are talking to would not even know that someone is talking to him! My english name has no meaning but my chinese name, 诗颖 (Shi Ying), basically means 'musically inclined and brilliant'.
For starters, my parents did not name me Princess Consuela or Mentos because I am not a princess (and Consuela sounds kind of weird, and it is difficult to pronounce), and naming me Mentos sounds crazy, because I am not a sweet. People's reaction when you first tell them your name is Mentos will be "What?! You sure?", and after that they will start teasing you, calling you all sorts of names like "Sweetie, come here" and 'Sweetie' might change into 'Tweetie' and then into 'Tweetie bird' and then...it would be really unpleasant. So Mentos is definitely NOT a good name.
I have not met anyone without a name and I do not think I am ever going to, (though I would like to, haha). Names are special. Each carries your parents' wishes in you... so everyone, please treasure them!

Names
Well i think names are very important to differentiate each other in a community. You won't want to have 100 people in a community to have the same name; you'll be all messed up =S.
Personally i think that one should not be ashamed of his/her own name. Your name was chosen out of many many millions of others that can be chosen from, and if you got a special name, or a name different from many others, you should be GLAD.
My name Joshua derives from the bible... im a saint haha. I also found out that Joshua is actually the English word for the Greek word JESUS... Oh my goodness because when i found that out i was screaming "OH JESUS, THANK YOU FOR MY NAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Seems really cool to be named after the Son of God, but there are other meanings for my name. One distinct one that people often point out is that Joshua was a leader in the bible; a great leader for that matter. And the name Joshua is often associated with leadership. Not being boastful or anything but i was once anoited by an international pastor, Jayme Montera, last year during a end-year church camp. He said that he could see me as a potential leader and that i will pave a way for many lost people out there who are non-believers, backsliders, or christians who have slackened in faith in God.
I am NOT called princess consuela or mentos or you-name-it for the simple reason that my parents did not choose that name=). First question, do i look like royalty at all? Second question, do i even ACT LIKE A GIRL? Last question, am i sweet?(actually yes haha i AM SWEET but i am not A SWEET). For the first and second questions, apparent answers happen to be... NO.
Overall i'm proud of my name.... even when people sometimes TWIST it. Some examples of my name TWISTED are: Joshee, josheewawa, Josh-chihuahua, Josh, Josheechihuahua.... you get the picture. But my original name is still the best =).

What's in a name
I've been told that names have meanings. I wonder, though, how do people create these meanings? My parents told me that they got my name from the Bible and ( I read it later on anyway) that it meant 'gazelle'. I also found out that my name is an Aramic (or something like that) name and the Greek version is Dorcas. Why my parents did not name me 'Princess Consuela' or 'Mentos' is quite obvious since I am not a princess and it would sound silly to name me after a brand of candy. Besides, I like my name just as it is!
PS. I was also told that the person who had the same name in the Bible actually died and was resurrected after that. (Acts chapter 9) Hmmm... wow! Also, a few people fail to pronounce it properly and I even wound up getting called names like 'Tapioca', 'Tibeta' (which sounds alot like 'Tibet'), 'Tellytubby' (by a nurse) and even 'Jupiter'! Sigh... there's certainly no end is there? Being mistakenly named a vegetable, a country, a TV character in a toddler's show, a planet...Oh no! What next?!

what's in a name
I think names are really important. Plus, they're fun to make up! Names are different for each and every person. Even if that isn't true, there's still your sirname and your chinese name! Like Elias (the one in our class) has the same name as my cousin! Even their sirnames are the same! Elias Tan! Their chinese names are different though. Many people have asked me why I am called Chantalle. The truth is, I have absolutely no idea! My parents said it was a french name and the brand of a bag ( I think). That's not very nice. I don't think there's a meaning behind my name. Ha, and my name's not pronounced correctly but I'll just stick ot the current one! It's nicer anyway. I just noticed that i have the longest name in class! There are nine letters in my name!
C-H-A-N-T-A-L-L-E!
Princess Consuela sounds funny. Maybe because they didn't even know there was such a name! Plus, I am definetely not a princess. Mentos is such a weird name to call a child. There's no meaning behind it. Unless its an acronym or something! Could you imagine that one day if your child asked you why his/ her name was Mentos. Then what are you going to tell him/ her? Would you reply, "Oh, its because I couldn't think of any other name at that time." or "I named you that because I absolutely LOVE sweets and Mentos is my favorite!" Maybe they named the kid Mentos because they want people to think that the kid's a sweet person? I mean sweet as in nice okay! Not like a sweet person as in like a person who is CRAZY about sweets. Plus I don't mean nice as the no meaning one. That's the misconception that nice means NOTHING! Now that's gibberish.

What's in MY name?
I feel that names are to differentiate people from others. Let say my name is Elias whoch it is, do you know any body else who is called Elias ? I do not think so and I do not know anyone who is called Elias! Names are special and most people have special names!
My name is after Elijah or Elisha who were prophets in the bible. My sis ter's means light and my brother's is also after another prophet!
I was given this name because my parents wanted me to follow after good people and be truthful, dilligent, servant of God and maybe ALL THE GOOD THINGS IN THE WORLD!
"Princess Consuela" - I AM NOT A PRINCESS OR A GIRL! IT IS SO OBVIOUS!
"Mentos"-DO I LOOK LIKE A SWEET TO YOU? (people's first impression of the word mentos- brand of a sweet.)

What is in a name? Hmmm.........
A name is of a great importance to anyone, at least that is what I believe. When I was young, I doubted to purpose of names and pondered on the fact why people could not be called by numbers. As I grew, I then realised there were about six billion "mortals" on the Earth. Then I understood names were used to identify a person in a community.
Why I was called Shawn my father says was became he disliked long names and pronunciations, as my father was educated in more in Chinese. Then he chanced upon my name in a baby names book. There was not much of a story of any kind.
Why my parents did not call me Princess Consuela or Mentos in pretty obvious. I am not a female or a mint. Well those are my answers to the questions Mrs. Simon posted.
Please critique.
Thank you!

Sorry!!
Sorry Mrs Simon, I forgot to change my display name so the name in Chinese is mine. Sorry again.
What's in a name
I agree with Edward that names are special. I also think that it is important as it is something that your parents give you. It also gives you something for people to call you.
In fact, I read a book called 'The Amulet of Samarkand'. It is a fantasy book, but the author who wrote it also thinks that names are special.

What's in a NAME!!! =)
Names are actually really important, they help us to differentiate us from one another. Anyway, according to the question why my parents didn't name me Princess Consuela because I'm not a female or Mentos as it would sound ridiculous. In this book I read, 'Wolfskin', there's a princess , Nessa who thinks that names can tell people about the person himself/herself.
Anyway, when too many people have the same name, even if the name is something glamorous, it will become something common because too many people have it. Like if only one person is named Tom in a decade, then 'Tom' would not be a common name anymore.
I think that most parents won't name their children 'Mentos' or 'Potato' or something like that as it would sound ridiculous and people would tease them. If th child's surname was Chip then definitely they won't name him/her Potato because the child's full name would be Potato Chip which would really be a ridiculous thing.
P.S. By the way, my mother said that my name means 'gift from God' which kind of proves Nessa's point as you can infer that my family believes in the Lord.
P.S.S. My mother named my brother and sister after saints.
P.S.S.S. My sister's name is Emelyn and my brother's name is Joshua
P.S.S.S.S. This makes me wonder whether Joshua F. is a born Christian/Catholic/Anglican/Methodist/______(blah...blah...blah)
