I wanted you to start thinking about our upcoming project with our Nueva friends.
Tell me in layman's terms what a hurricane is.
What are the conditions that lead to a hurricane occurring?
Please do not be too "scientific".

A hurricane is a gigantic cyclone which sweeps water all over land?
Heh. A hurricane is sort of like a very quickly circulating gust of wind that goes along at approximately 50km/h, destroying everything in its path. It will eventually die down, but if it happens to cross a water body then due to the temperature and the currents it may pick up again, like how Katrina did. The hurricane, not a person.
Here's my research:
What is a Hurricane?
A hurricane is an intense, rotating oceanic weather system that possesses maximum sustained winds exceeding 119 km/hr (74 mph). It forms and intensifies over tropical oceanic regions.
Hurricanes are generally smaller than storms in mid-latitudes, typically about 500 km (311 miles) in diameter. At the ocean’s surface, the air spirals inward in a counterclockwise direction. This cyclonic circulation becomes weaker with height, eventually turning into clockwise (anticyclonic) outflow near the top of the storm.
Generally, hurricanes, cyclones and typhoons all belong to the same "family" of tropical storms.
:)
Some info taken from http://www.comet.ucar.edu/nsflab/web/hurricane/311.htm
Hurricanes can become worse with warmer weather, I think.

A hurricane is a type of storm system characterized by a low pressure center and thunderstorm, producing strong winds and flooding rains. (Taken from Wikipedia) ^.^
They are also known as typhoon, tropical storm etcetc.

A hurricane is a hot wind rising and cold wind sinking, causing a vortex.
A hurricane is a huge vortex that sweep people and their houses away. Yes, I think so.
hurricanes are regional names for tropical cyclones. A cyclone non-frontal synoptic scale low-pressure system over tropical or sub-tropical waters and increases its speed when it travels over warm waters. (like katrina)
Hurricane: typhoons, cyclones, tornado, whirlwind... very severe storm caused by Earth's unequal heating (oh no, scientific...) made worse by Global Warming?
a hurricane is a tropical storm which is enormous and some of the really large ones colu strech from one end of australia to the other (or so i have read).
A hurricane is a tropical cyclone whichis a type of storm system characterized by a low pressure center and thunderstorms, producing strong wind and flooding rain. A tropical cyclone feeds on the heat released when moist air rises and the water vapor condenses.

yes! i am in the top ten!

A hurricane is a tropical cyclone. It is sometimes accompanied by rain, thunder or lightning.
Hurricanes are caused by warm temperature, low pressure, the tropical wind patterns and the moist areas (eg. over the ocean).
--Ching Ying--
A hurricane is like a gust of wind circulating at a really high speed. A hurricane is not really that dangerous. It is the flying debris that is picked up by the hurricane. They smash into building causing a lot of damage.
(got this information from a documentry in discovery channel)
JC :)
Aww I'm eleventh. =(
Hurricanes are caused by weather patterns and can cause incredible damage. When they travwel over warm oceans, they gain power. Katrina was a class 1 at first, but because of global warmi9ng etc. it became Class 5 when it hit New Orleans. Quote; An Inconvenient truth

A hurricane is a funnel cloud that obliterates everything in its path, right?
~Marcus Ooi~
A hurricane is a strong wind that so called rotates around which destroys houses buildings etc
Fine, a hurricane is a "wind mechaism" which destroys everything in its path unlike a tornado which "jumps" and destroys the things which get in its way.
A hurricane is as destructive as I am.
A hurricane is so loud, so strong, so powerful, fast (I had gold for NAPFA in P4 and P5), causes the government to go chaotic and disrupts everything on they way.
Don't I resemble a hurricane?
Also, hurricanes are rather big-sized. They can be very big at times. Sadly, that's not where we resemble. I am not fat :D

A hurricane is sort of like a whirling wind that just walks everywhere leaving a path of destruction. Scientists like to name these hurricanes but if some hurricanes are very powerful eg. Katrina, scientists won't use these names anymore. So technically, the hurricane can just destroy everything. it will soon slow down and 'sleep' but if it passes by a body ofr warm, as in warn water, it will pick up speed. its sort of like a little wake up call.
What no. am I?
Anyway....
A hurricane is a natural disaster. It's like a gigantic cyclone. Large gusts of winds. Something like a tornado, but a hurricane like Katrina sweeps water everywhere!!!!
Okay, I'm not very good at doing this, am I?
Forgive me!!!
Nicolette Lee =)
A hurricane is a, rotating system of clouds, thunderstorms and wind. Structurally, a tropical cyclone is a large, rotating system of clouds, wind, and thunderstorms. Its primary energy source is the release of the heat of condensation from water vapor condensing at high altitudes, the heat being ultimately derived from the sun.
Hmm... A hurricane is a giant wind that is caused by changing weather patterns. It starts from the water. As it continues to spin, it gets stronger and stronger, especially if the surrounding is warm or hot. ( From "An Inconvenient Truth")
Then it spins and spins and goes onto land, where it destroys everything in its path.
A hurricane can cause great damage who could cost a lot of money.

<3 i beat nikki by 2 minutes!
P.S. It's a really destructive force!
DESTROY!!!!
Fine.
Nicolette again.
A hurricane is a strong storm caused by certain winds. They usually get stronger after going over a patch of warm water. they can cause a lot of devastation.
It is a kind of swirl of hot air in the sea which goes onto land and wreck havoc. the warmer the air in the hurricane is, the worse it gets and the higher the speed
A huricane is a 'gust?' of cold and hot air 'spinning around?' and it destroys anything in its path and has 5 stages. Hurrican katrina turned to a stage 5 hurricane cause it flew over a 'lake?' of hot water.
A hurricane produces strong wind and flooding rain. It gets stronger when it feeds on the heat released when moist air rises and the water vapour condenses. It dies down over land.
By the way, Hurricane Katrina happened on my birthday 29th August. :0

Noooo i lost 1st position T.T
Oh yeah, some information on a hurricane:
A hurricane is a very heavy storm which can do massive damage. It can cause flooding and its winds can even bloe off rooftops of houses! it can also cause tornados and very high/strong waves.
Tze How
a hurricane is a very strong swirling wind which gets stronger as it gets warmer. I think.
A hurricane is as powerful as myself. Like me, it is a destructive force that is made of high wind speeds and (of course)TONS of water. Just Like ME!
A hurricane is started when a tropical storm brews over the ocean and the oceans temperature is hot. In the end, the hurricane does much DAMAGE including killing innocent ahmas!
See the resemblance?
A hurrricane is actually a cane of wind that hurries. Well, it twist and turns and sucks up things like monkeys, AHMAs, and a german person called Nhoj (no puns intended), and throws them far, far away. Well, actually, a hurricane is a strong gust of wind that spins around sucking and blowing off people and houses.
A hurricane is formed when hot air rises and cold air falls over and over again until...
I thinks you can finish it.
A hurricane is a tropical storm or cyclone. It is formed in warm ocean water, usually during summer or fall.
The strength of the hurricane can be affected by the windspeed and the temperature as it travels. It also destroys mostly everything destroy-able in it's way, and flying debris can hit people on the head and kill them.
-Aileen
A hurricane is just a gigantic vortex that sends people flying off into mid-air(and their stuff too).
(The only thing I wonder now is how long will it take for them to come back down? Well... I don't wanna know.)
Hmm wait. Only New Orleans was affected by the Hurricane Katrina on 29th August. The other cities were affected from 23-26 August.
So it didnt really happen ON my birthday :D

A hurricane is a type of storm system characterised by a low pressure center and thunderstorm. It produces very strong winds and torrential rain. It can produce flooding too. A hurricane is also know as a typhoonor tropical storm.

[YOUSH XD]
here is my definition of a hurricane. My source is Wikipedia.
A hurricane is a type of storm system characterized by a low pressure center and thunderstorms, producing strong wind and flooding rain.
The factors that lead to hurricanes are 1. Water temperatures of at least 26.5 degrees Celsius 2. Rapid cooling with height 3. High humidity 4. Low amounts of wind shear 5. Must form at least 500 km or 5 degrees from the Equator 6.Pre-existing form of disturbed weather
That is all. Thank you.
A tropical cyclone is a storm that is born and sustained over large bodies of warm water (usually oceans and seas)and loses its strength over land. It feeds on the heat released when moist air rises and the water vapour condenses.
They can cause extreme damage to coastal regions, while the inland regions are quite safe from it.

So sorry about missing the dateline, am not feeling too well. :(
A hurricane is a destructive natural disaster. It is a swirling vortex of wind and is also known as a cyclone, typhoon or tornado. It has wind speeds strong enough to send cows flying, even houses.

Definition of a hurricane
A tropical cyclone is a type of storm system characterized by a low pressure center and thunderstorms, producing strong wind and flooding rain. A tropical cyclone feeds on the heat released when moist air rises and the water vapor condenses. Because tropical cyclones are "warm core" storm systems, they are fueled by a different heat mechanism than other cyclonic windstorms such as nor'easters, European windstorms, and polar lows.
Factors of hurricane formation
Water temperatures of at least 26.5 °C (80°F) are needed down to a depth of at least 50 m (150 feet). Waters of this temperature cause the overlying atmosphere to be unstable enough to sustain convection and thunderstorms. Another factor is rapid cooling with height. This allows the release of latent heat, which is the source of energy in a tropical cyclone. High humidity is needed, especially in the lower-to-mid troposphere; when there is a great deal of moisture in the atmosphere, conditions are more favorable for disturbances to develop. Low amounts of wind shear are needed, as when shear is high, the convection in a cyclone or disturbance will be disrupted, preventing formation of the feedback loop. Tropical cyclones generally need to form over 500 km (310 miles) or 5 degrees from the equator. This allows the Coriolis force to deflect winds blowing towards the low pressure center, causing a circulation. Lastly, a formative tropical cyclone needs pre-existing system of disturbed weather. The system must have some sort of circulation as well as a low pressure center.
Hurricanes are powerful storms that begin over warm water bodies near the equator before moving towards the North and South poles. They are very strong and can cause a lot of devastation within an affected area. I guess it can be worsened if global warming continues.
think it’s layman enough.
:) Natasha.
Hurricane thinks itself like a playful naughty toddler. Unfortunately this toddler is too powerful and fast moving wind that carries anything in its path. If it is too strong it can even carry heavy things such as car. (it reminds me of the movie-‘Honey I Blew the Kid’) It is a natural process but it is also getting worse due to inconsiderate human activities such as discarding toxic gases into atmosphere without proper recycle treatment. I heard that if people stay underground they can escape the danger of getting hit by the things that the strong wind carries or throws or hurl or slash or whatever!
